　　"The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."
　　观点：承认历史学习可以让我们在过去的人身上找到共同点，但是上面太绝对了，历史还有其他一样很重要的作用。
　　历史让我们发现人在任何时期是有共性的。(人的某些特性是不会消失的，比如人都会贪婪，自满complacency ，presumptuous 等，所以古代的寓言Aesop fables到现在还有很有指导意义的。)
　　但是历史的作用不仅如此，
　　我们可以从学习过去中了解自己，了解这个社会。(它告诉我们我们自己是谁，来自何处，给我们必要的知识和不同的人交流。过去的知识就好像人们的 记忆。A human is a useless cripple without a memory,and can become someone else’s puppet when true memories are replaced with false。而且现在很多事情发生的原因都是来自过去，要解决现在问题，我们要求了解过去。比如巴以冲突Israeli-Palestinian conflict之类。
　　我们可以从中吸取灵感，以便做更大的进步。(社会要取得进步，人们必须知道过去的成功，过去的失败，以及还有什么是没做的，什么需要改变的，过 去资源丰富，我们可以避免错误，我们从中汲取灵感和力量。很多艺术家都是这样的。作曲家瓦格纳(richard wagner)r就是在历史名城(lurzern)完成传世之作的)
　　我们可以找到精神归属，不至于在当今社会迷失自己。(现在各种物质吸引的东西多，人们很容易迷失自己，找不到方向感，现在各种社会问题很严重， 青少年自杀，抑郁症(psychology symptoms of depression,回头看到过去frontiersmen, the mountainmen and the explorers. and because it bespoke a dignity and self reliance，就会重新有希望和方向 )
　　所以历史的学习可以很有用的，它可以让我们活得更好。
