每一种语言都有传递其文化内涵和智慧的谚语，具有悠久历史的中文自不必说，但西方的英语虽然历史不长，却同样有很多谚语或歇后语，蕴含着生活的哲理和智慧。

一、 No gains without pains. （No pains, no gains）

意思是没有不劳而获的事，不劳则无获。（人不付出，何来收获。）

活学活用：

gains 收获、赚钱、增加名词 ─ His investment brought him no gains at all. 他的投资没有带给他任何收益。

动词 ─ She worked to gain her living. 她工作挣生活费。

─ My watch gains 5 minutes. 我的表快5分钟。

─ gained an upper hand 占上风─ gained control of something 指控制某些事

pains 痛苦、劳苦

名词 ─ I have pains all over. 我全身疼痛。

─ He is a pain in the neck. 他很令人讨厌；用来形容讨厌的人

动词 ─ My arm is paining. 我的胳膊痛。

─ My tooth pains me. 我的牙痛。

二、 Birth is much, but breeding is more.意思指教养、比门第出身更重要（出生好固然重要，配合好的家庭教养栽培就更出色了。）中国传统的教养体现在儒家的“仁、义、礼、智、信”中，古人也以琴棋书画来陶冶情操。

活学活用：

1、birth 名词用，指出生、家世、门第─ a man of noble birth 出生高贵的人─ give birth to a baby boy 生了一个男婴─ birth mark 出生胎记─ birth place 出生地─ birth rate 人口出生率─ birth stone 象征诞生月份的宝石─ birthright 长子继承权。

2、breeding 名词、养育、熏陶、繁殖─ a man of fine breeding 指有教养、文化的人─ breeding pond 养鱼池─ cross breeding 异种繁殖法─ ill bred 形容人教养不良─ well bred 指人的教养好。
