IELTS听力横听笔记--高频词汇（Degree）

Degree: An academic title given by a college or university to a student who has completed a course of study: 学位由学院或大学授予完成学业的学生的学术称号

这个词在IELTS考试中考过两次，一次在V30的Section 4，讲到娱乐治疗师应当具有master’s degree（硕士学位），另一次是在V37的section 2，讲到健身俱乐部的教练至少要有一定的degree（学位），这两个version都要求填写degree这个词。在国外，从事专业性的、技术性的工作，都必须具备一定的qualification（资格），而获得某种学位（degree）则是资格的其中条件之一。此外，大多数行业的从业者必须进行某种形式的考核获得执照（licence）后成为professional的从业者才能从事相应的技术工作。许多国家的法律规定，没有执照的从业者从业是违法的。下面列举了一些常见的学位。

Bachelor’s degree学士学位

Doctor’s degree 博士学位

Ph.D＝Doctor of Philosophy哲学博士
　　DAS＝Doctor of Astronomy 天文学博士
M. D.= Doctor of Medicine医学博士

大家注意：Ph.D虽然从字面上解释是哲学博士，但并不是指所学的专业就是哲学，前几天在报上看了一片文章，说某公司人事部门在招聘一“海龟”时看见学位证书上写的是Ph.D，不禁大惑：我们不需要学哲学的博士，随拿到学位认证中心要求认证，结果工作人员仔细讲解一番后才恍然大悟。不过科学确实与哲学有着紧密的联系，看看哲学的部分英文解释就明白了。

Philosophy: （1）Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline. 对智慧的热爱与追求，通过智力途径和道德上的自律来达到对智慧的热爱与追求；(2) The investigation of causes and laws underlying reality. 哲理的探讨，在现实的基础上对原因和规律的探究 (3) Inquiry into the nature of things based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods. 自然科学基于逻辑推理而不是凭经验得来的方法来探究事物的本质 (4) The critique and analysis of fundamental beliefs as they come to be conceptualized and formulated. 批判分析对将要概念化和公式化的基本信念的审定与分析。

攻读博士学位期间的主要工作就是对各自的方向依据上述哲学原理进行广泛而深入的研究，因此除了医学、法律、神学三个学科之外，其余的博士学位获得者学位证书上写的都是Ph.D。

By the way, Rocky 就是Ph.D了， haha…。

Certificate: (1) A document certifying that a person may officially practice in certain professions. 执照，证明某人可正式从事某行业的文件. (2) A document testifying to the truth of something:
证（明）书，证明事物真实性的文件，如a certificate of birth，出生证明；postdoctoral certificate,博士后证书

目前这个词考过两次，一次是V26的section 1；另一次是V37的section 2。与degree不同的是，由于该词的拼写较为复杂，因此其考点只出现在选择题中，但是考生应该记住它的拼写。在degree的解释中说过，在西方国家，从事专业技术工作必须要有相应的职业资格证书，例如从事幼儿园的工作，必须要有certificate of child care。
